The Course - Why Study Psychology
Studying Psychology will help you understand how people think, behave, communicate and interact with each other. There are so many things that psychologists study that you have probably never even thought of them!
Psychologists focus on things that have probably happened to you or a friend. Have you ever wondered why your dog runs to you every time it hears a can opener? Have you wondered why some smells reminds you of past events or why they place chocolates on lower shelves in the supermarket? How about why people react differently to thunderstorms? Studying psychology helps you uncover the reasons behind all these experiences and so much more!
Psychology is for everyone who is interested in finding out more about yourselves and others around you. If you enjoy working with people and bringing out the best in them, this is definitely the course for you!

What do they do?
Clinical Psychologist
Clinical psychologists work with patients with psychological disorders. Their work involves assessment, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental disorders. They often work in hospitals, mental health clinics and private practice, where they focus on treating psychological and psychiatric disorders. Some specialty areas within clinical psychology include child mental health, adult mental health, learning disabilities, emotional traumas, substance abuse, geriatrics and health psychology.
Developmental Psychologist
Developmental psychologists are trained in human development. This includes physiological, cognitive and social development at every stage of our lives. They study both the biological influences (such as genetics) and environmental aspects (such as parenting styles) that shape who we are. Their career opportunities include work in universities and schools, research facilities, elderly assisted living homes, teen outreach programs, hospitals, psychiatric institutions and private practices.
Educational Psychologist
An educational psychologist studies how children and adults learn in educational settings. They also work with children and adults who have learning difficulties (for example, dyslexia and autism). They perform the duties such as developing educational tests, evaluating educational programs, consulting schools to implement teaching and assessment changes. They also try to improve current teaching methods.
Cognitive Psychologist
Cognitive psychologists are concerned with how people acquire, process and store information. This includes language, attention, memory, decision-making and problem-solving. They usually work in academia, government agencies and private consulting.
Social Psychologist
Social psychologists study how social influence, social perception and social interaction influence individual and group behaviour.They usually choose to work in educational environments, the government, non-profit organizations, hospitals, social service offices and private corporations.
0rganizational Psychologist
Organizational psychologists aim to increase employee satisfaction and performance and the quality of work life in organizational settings through the application of psychological principles. They are usually employed by larger companies to guide employee selection, training and to manage work-related stress and conflict.
Forensic Psychologist
Forensic psychologists apply psychology to the fields of criminal investigation and law. They often work with other experts to solve crimes through offender profiling. They also help resolve child custody disputes, and investigate suspected child abuse.
Sports Psychologist
Sports psychologists focus on the psychological aspects of sports and athletics, motivation, performance and injury. They help to improve athletic performance or using sports to improve mental and physical health. Sports psychologists work in a wide variety of settings including universities, hospitals, athletic centers, sport clubs, private consulting practices and research facilities.
